Frequently asked questions

Why have you introduced Ecogold?

For some time, our customers have been asking us for ethical alternatives to the gold currently available on the precious metals market. Ecogold is made from recycled gold and is fully traceable from source - in other words, we know exactly where it comes from. Equally important, our provision of Ecogold will help to reduce the demand for newly mined gold - which means it will also reduce the associated environmental and human impacts of gold mining.

What other Green initiatives do you have?

We are involved with Fair-trade Fairmined Gold, plus we have annual targets for reducing our water and electricity usage - and we're investigating the possibility of achieving zero landfill recycling status.

Can you supply ecosilver, ecoplatinum and ecopalladium?

These products are currently in development.

When you recycle alloys, is the whole alloy recycled?

At the moment only the gold content is recycled.

I’ve used both Ecogold and standard gold in a certain piece of jewellery. What claims can I make about its recycled content now that I’ve mixed the two golds?

Clearly if Ecogold products are available then they should be used to make the piece of jewellery. However, we recognise that this is a new alloy development and it may take time to cover all the product variants currently available and you may have to use non Ecogold parts and components. In this case the majority of the gold content in the finished piece must be Ecogold.

It's important to remember that any Ecogold claims have to be substantiated not only around content but traceability and segregation.

How do I calculate the percentages of the two types of gold?

Simply weigh the Ecogold; then weigh the other gold content. Add the two together, and express the Ecogold content as a percentage of the total weight.

Does my Ecogold come with proof of authenticity?

Yes. Your Ecogold invoice will state: "Ecogold is produced using a fully audited process to guarantee that the product you have purchased is made from 100% recycled gold."

Is there an Ecogold hallmark?

There’s a Good Delivery Bar Mark for Ecogold delivered in bar format. These bars will carry the Cookson Ecogold logo, which is positioned centrally between the SEMPSA JP mark (denoting the place of manufacture in Spain) and date stamp (denoting date of manufacture).

Consumer recycled mark

Finished jewellery supplied to retailers should carry the Ecometal mark, to assist differentiation of recycled product from non-recycled product in-store.

How will you audit the usage of Ecogold? For example, I could buy a kilo of Ecogold and make Ecogold claims for all my future purchases of gold - whether or not they’re made from Ecogold.

Major volume customers will need to sign a Declaration of Custody, which will make them responsible for controlling their Ecogold in terms of segregation and traceability. It will also make them open to being audited, with the costs being borne by them.

All other customers will have to accept the Ecogold addition to our current Terms & Conditions before they can order Ecogold.

How do you know that the gold you use to make Ecogold is not newly mined?

We know because all the gold we accept for the Ecogold recycling process has been converted into some other form other than a newly mined bar, irrespective of which industry we buy it from. The industries from which we purchase scrap gold include jewellery, giftware, industrial, medical and electronics markets.

If a bar is supplied for conversion to Ecogold, written proof must be supplied, confirming that the bar is not from a mine or from fine gold that has not previously been recycled.

Is your solder made from Ecogold?

The panels are, but the paste isn’t. Product conversion will be a gradual process, for more information contact your local Cookson office.

Are your findings made from Ecogold?

Not yet - but if you’re concerned about mixing non-Ecogold findings with an Ecogold piece then please refer to our terms and conditions: Clearly if Ecogold products are available then they should be used to make the piece of jewellery.

How does the cost of Ecogold compare with non-ecogold?

Ecogold costs a little more than non-ecogold because of the process of guaranteeing that it’s 100% recycled Ecogold. This includes the segregation from newly mined gold, a new dedicated refining plant in Spain, and auditing of all these processes.

If you don’t know the original source of the gold, how can you be sure that it’s ethical?

Inevitably, all the gold we accept for Ecogold production was newly mined at some time in the past. Equally though, all the gold we accept for Ecogold production has been used for another purpose (in industries such as jewellery, giftware, industrial, medical and electronics) before it comes to us. We can be sure of this because it comes in scrap form - and where it comes in bar form, it must be accompanied by a Declaration of Provenance.

What do you mean by the term ‘Eco’?

‘Eco’ covers a range of positive attributes, including environmentally friendly, green, sustainable, ethical, and having innate product integrity. In relation to Ecogold, we specifically mean that it’s a product that has been recycled via traceable process into fine gold.
